Indian Rituals and the Science behind them 🔬
India is a land of many rituals, practices and beliefs. And though we seem to have turned the word rituals into a superstitious one in the present day world, there is still a lot of reasons to look back and reflect on the rituals that had been practised in the past years, decades and centuries. The ancient, right kind of rituals have a lot of hidden science and deep meaning in them and have the potential in them to make our lives a better and more meaningful one.
Here are a few rituals that I had come across through sources online and through people whom I know, and would like to share them with all of you out there! (along with the science behind them of course 😊)
Number 1:
The Indian Greeting, Namaskar : When we bring our hands together to greet a person in front of us, our fingertips meet and activate pressure points in the body, this helps in remembering the person in front of us longer. And it is also viewed as a symbol of us connecting with the oneness in the person in front of us.
Number 2:
Ringing Bells: The bells designed in ancient India were made of several metals and alloys and usually produced sounds that lasted for seven seconds thus activating the seven chakras in our body. The bell sound further helped in psychological programming by emptying the negative thoughts out of the mind and by creating a unity between the left and right parts of our brains.
Number 3:
Order of Eating- Spices first, Sweets next: It is always considered a good practice to start a meal with spices and end it with sweets, reason being that spicy foods enhance the secretion of digestive juices and help in making the digestive process efficient while sweets slow down the secretion of these juices and settle down the digestion.
Number 4:
Ear Piercing: This which was long before an Indian tradition (origins in Europe) has now grown into a modern practice where people belonging to all lands have started identifying ear piercing as a fashion trend. However the roots behind this tradition goes back to piercing of ear helping in developing intellect and the power of thinking. The piercing also helps in keeping us free from ear related disorders and is said to help in speech restraint and in keeping us calm.
Number 5:
Surya Arghya or Praying to the Sun God in the Morning: It is said to be a good practice to perform Surya Arghya to the Sun God by offering water and prayers in the morning. This enables us to bring discipline and good routines into our life, as we get to wake up at the same time and perform something refreshing at the start of everyday. The rays of the Sun that pass through the water are also said to rejuvenate and improve our eyesight.
So PS: How can we benefit from the ancient rituals that were started long ago and that of which we are unsure if they even hold any value in our day to day lives? Here are a few fun tips to get a few of these rituals that were explained above into our daily lives.
- The next time you meet a friend, try greeting them with an extra Namaskar 🙏 (along with the smiles and handshakes and hugs)
- Try to get a small cute bell 🔔 in your house that you can ring might be once a day, as a random practice (gives you something to divert on in your busy life and enhances your mind power without you even having to be aware of it)
- The next time you are in a buffet or at a marriage function, try going for the spicy food 🍲 first and finish it up with a sweet 🍬 (who knows, your digestive system may go crazy with dhamaka that day!)
- If you are interested and if you already don’t have one, try getting a fun ear piercing 👂
- And if you are a morning person and prefer to wake up before the sun rises, try offering water to the sun 🌞 one of those days and see what it does to your routine and eyes both. Even if you don’t offer water, I still believe it is considered good to look (don’t stare, just look😜) at the sun while it rises, that benefits your eyes as well.
I really hope you try out some of these rituals and I will try to follow-up this post with more such fun and meaningful rituals that I come across. Thank you for reading through❤️
